MG MGA - Muffler exhaust tip direction

I just installed a new silencer / muffler on my 1500 today. However, if I install the muffler as it looks as though it shuld go, the exhaust tip points toward the middle of the car, sort of towards the license plate. If I twist the muffler around so the exhaust tip points straight backwards and sligntly downward, it doesn't want to fit correctly next to the gas tank. When new, how did the exhaust tip point out?

Point it to about 3 o'clock.

Point it to 2 o'clock, just below the bumper bar and just inside the overrider. The off-center pipe should be at the bottom, muffler straight up, about equal distance between leaf spring and fuel tank.

If you point the tip anywhere between 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock you can get exhaust fumes in the cockpit with top down. The air currente are strange back there when it's moving, so there is good reason why it points to 2 o'clock.

Thanks Barney, but excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't pointing at 2 o'clock be pointing upward? Looking at a clock face, 2 o'clock is upward to the right. I have never seen an exhaust pipe pointing upward? Am I missing something here?

Yup,that's what Barney is saying - the tip points slightly upwards. I think I have it about right on mine, look at:

Also see page 22 of "Original MGA" by Clausager for several examples. If you don't have a copy I can scan the page for you and email it.
