MG MGA - My 1500 Flasher Unit Failed! Help, Suggestions?

Hi guys, the night before my road inspection my flashers failed. All new wiring, excellent grounds, new bulbs, etc. What happens is they come on and stay on. Brake lights work fine but tested the control box anyway which was also fine. Went to MGAGuru, tested the flasher unit as described, and it failed.! My question is can I install a standard 3-prong flasher unit to get me by? I know the 1500 is quirky with the control box and all but this shouldn't mess with the flasher unit. Should it? Any emergency help would be greatly appreciated as I am going on a business trip for three weeks starting Thursday!

Tom. Go ahead and install a three post flassher unit. It will work okay.

Hi Tom. I installed a standard 3 prong flasher on my MGA and it works well. You will need to convert the wires to push on terminals though, unless you want to devise a method to use screws on the push on terminals. Good luck. Glenn

If you have been to the MGAGuru site then you know that Barney suggests that the flasher must be compatible with the circuit (The flasher only works properly when it is driving two 21 watt lamps in parallel (for the turn signals of course)).I tried purchasing several different three prong flashers from local auto parts stores and they didn't work. Finally bought a lucas flasher and everything is fine. Seems that most modern three prong flasher units are designed to operate at different wattage and the flasher then doesn't work, the lights just remain on steady.

Tom,
My unit failed, and I purchased the correct flasher which was not satisfactory. These are load sensitive and to me it flashed too quickly. So I purchased a standard sunit at 1/4 the price. The unit I bought has prongs that are the same as those on headlamp. So I purched a headlamp socket. Works great.
