MG MGA - Mystery Head
Hello all, I need some help identifying a head that came off of a 3 main 1800 that I've had in the corner of my garage for many years. It does not have a 15 or 16 cast into it yet still has the smaller valves of a 1500 head. Any ideas? Thanks! John

Hi John. The B series engine was used in many vehicles, including non MG marques. Many of the non MG marque cylinder heads were unmarked as you describe. However, as long as the head works adequately well, I would not worry about the markings, unless perhaps you are doing a concours restoration. A head with bigger valves might give you a boost in performance. Cheers! Glenn

There will be a casting number between the rocker posts - what is it?

I would not think you would want to use a head with the smaller valves such as you describe (1500) on an 1800 engine. John

Sounds like it is off a 1500 Austin or some such. The good thing - you'll have higher compression with the small chamber head on an 1800. The bad thing - your valves are smaller and you'll end up with less power.
