MG MGA - New Floorboards

Hi

Just finished the floorboards using a combination of the old as patterns and Barney's plans. Very pleased with the result,they fit. Now to get paint on them and let them dry while I get on putting in the new harness, brake pipes etc.

Looking good Barry! Don't forget the drain slots and I assume you have a 1500 low starter engine? You might find it best to drill all the holes before painting and also to fit the seat mounting captive fixings before installing the boards to the frame (especially if you use the original type). These are all the things I will do next time! fuel pump, earth strap and exhaust mount are also easier to access before the boards are fitted, although still possible afterwards. Also make a note of where the longer fixings are required for p-clips and earth points.

Thanks for the info, are the drain slots the one on the inboard side of the two rear boards about halfway along? I didn't put them in because I could find a reason for them. I am going to use nuts and bolts and flat washers for seat fixing. I will be installing as much as possible before putting the boards on, and then I'll put the body back on. My next job is to get the chassis rolling again. I have an 1800 engine and yes with low starter gearbox.

Yhe number was not legible either before cleaning or after. I considered restamping it but then decided against it.

Yes Barry that slot aligns with the hole in the transmission tunnel.

Also I found a black non setting gutter mastic that was an inexpensive and convenient seal for fitting the boards.

You should install the tunnel before you conclude that the floorboards actually fit. Drill the screw holes as part of the final fitting before painting, Paint and seal everything. Soak the edge grain of the plywood with some kind of wood preservative, and make some concerted effort to seal the wood before painting it.

Drain holes are optional. I caulked all around mine to be water tight. When you have carpet and carpet padding, and one little drain port on the tunnel, it isn't going to drain anyway. You can glue the carpet padding down, but leave the flat floor carpet pieces loose to lift out for drying. Use LTD studs to hold the front carpets in place. Carpet pieces under the seats will stay put without fasteners. Cut slots around the seal rails to slide those carpet pieces in from the back.
