MG MGA - New front pads needed.

Hi All.
I need a new set of front pads for my 1960 mk 2 MGA. Can you fit MGB V8 pads like the Mgbs do? Any other recommendations please?
Thanks.

I don't think MGB pads will fit the MGA caliper.

But you can get MGA pads with various pad materials, the best is Mintex M1144 if you can get it, (Bob West still can get them), they are awesome, if you do a search through the archive section on this site you will get lots of info.
They give instant bite, even from cold, they get even better after they have had even a second or two warming up and they don't need excessive pressure to work.

The worst brake pads are "Greenstuff" from EBC, they are exactly the opposite of the Mintex M1144, they need lots of brake pedal pressure and they have no instant bite.
I bought a new set but scrapped them after a week or two, I hated them.

If you are not looking for upgraded brake performance, then the std Moss pads are not too bad, but once you have fitted Mintex M1144, you will never go back.

Hi Colin

Many thanks. I've ordered a set of 1144s from Questmead. They'll be with me in a couple of weeks. I look forward to trying them, not cheap compared to Moss standard pads but I hope the braking improvement is worth it.

Hi Simon,
here is the link to the Mintex M1144 vs Greenstuff pads thread from the archive a few years ago. It includes the recommended "bedding-in" instructions for the pad material, which is fun to do, also probably best done early morning when there is no traffic around.

Hi Colin. 1144s should be with me tomorrow from Questmead. I let you all no how I get on.
Thanks again.

Hi. Does anyone know whether they do 1141 shoes, or any other better than Moss option for shoes?

Hi Paul and Simon,
I have posted on here before about the obvious performance difference between Greenstuff and Mintex M1144 pads, with, in my opinion, the M1144 pads being head and shoulders above the Greenstuff pads.

I have always wanted to do a direct comparison between the Moss standard MGA brake pad and the Mintex M1144 version.
It just came to me that Simon is in the ideal position to do a direct back to back test for us.

I know Simon has just paid out a lot of money for his Mintex M1144 pads, but the standard Moss MGA pad are only around £25 a set (inc VAT) just now.

So, I would be happy to pay Simon to buy a set of Moss pads for him to try out for us after he has used his new Mintex ones for a a while. Then, he could let us all know what difference he finds between the two types.

I would normally happy to carry out this back-to-back test myself, but at the moment I am waiting to have a replacement left ankle joint, a new left knee joint and also surgery on my right knee.

So, I just can't get down onto the garage floor to do this stuff just now. (I have even had to pay someone recently to adjust my headlights, which rankled quite a bit!)

Maybe, two or three of us could offer to share the cost of the new Moss pads?

Just an idea, but at least we would then all know how they compared.

Cheers
