MG MGA - New oil pumps

My factory original oil pump is badly scored. The usual catalogue (Moss et.al.) prices are less than $100. The local British car guy quotes~$280 for 'OE' and claims the others are 'offshore' and much inferior. Any experience? Thanks, Bob.

When you live in N.A., the U.K. is offshore. Is that a problem for your MG parts?

I have purchased a few oil pumps (to put it mildly). I suppose they all came from Moss Motors or from a Moss distributor. I seem to recall them being UK manufacture in past years. This is one part I do not keep in inventory, because I have never had any problem with an oil pump, as a new oil pump will outlast the rest of the engine in good form.

If the rotors are scored but the pump body is okay (very common), you can rebuild the oil pump with a new rotor set. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/of107b.htm

I purchased a pump through Little British Car Co. last year and it was junk. No fault to Jeff Zorn as he offered to take it back. The problem was with the pick up tube and pump body. The lines were just cast and not machined out as the original. Very rough casting at that. I ended up using the pick up off the old pump and did some porting mods on the new pump body.

It works well now.

Of note is the pickup screen. Be sure to closely inspect your screen if re-using to make sure there aren't any cracks around the mounting area, also be sure to use gaskets and a good sealant. You don't want any air to slip in around the top of the screen.

I've no idea what he wants for a pump, but I can garantee that it won't be a Moss part. Best not to mention their name to him, in fact, unless you've got a free long distance plan! Ho brings all his parts in from the UK.

Barney, the outer housing is scored so I doubt a rebuild would work. I think 'offshore' is a PC term. Thank you guys for a quick but mixed response. I'll follow up if I learn more. Bob

I just paid $148cdn for a new water pump. Moss lists this part at about $45-50 US so why the difference? Well I can tell you that the one I bought (the name on the box is County) does not have a cheap plastic impeller, it is completely metal and it is extremely well put togther. Is it worth the difference, well to me it is. I imagine it's the same with the oil pump from your local parts man.

It was the same with the break pads I just bought. The Moss ones had begun to flake badly after not much use over 2 years. I guess they didn't like the storage. The replacement ones I just bought were about 60% more expensive but seem better made. Only time with tell though.

So, is there a US source for better than Moss quality parts? Other than the place in Rhode Island that will never get my business again, that is.
