MG MGA - New Tyres
I was considering doing a track day untill someone asked how old my tyres were.10years on while rebuilding and another 5 just running about. my A is fitted with a 5 bearing B engine and Moss supercharger. Can any one suggest what tyres I should change too I have 4 1/2'' 60 spoke wires. David |

David, You can always get a set of Michelin XZX from Coker tire for a hefty price. The last tires I purchased were made by Kelley (165r15) and they seem to perform fine. The tread is very similar to that of the Michelins. I have a set of Michelin's on my roadster and they look very good but are 7 years old. It pains me but after the discussion here I have decided to replace them in a year or so. Have a good day! John |

Hi David, an A with a Blown B engine? I'm not sure, but I think Barney's site (mgaguru.com) has some info on wheel width and suitable tyres (or "tires") for them. John's 165 suggestion sounds sensible, but I'd check the profile too (eg. 165 70 or 165 65?), to maintain the correct diameter of the overall wheel and tyre combination. I've got a set of 6"x16 wires off an Aston Martin DB4 on my 2.1L MGA, which take 195 to 205 tyres comfortably (and a much lower profile). In the long run, it might be worth a shot investing in a new set of wheels - try ebay or similar for a set of 5" or 5.5" wheels. If you're after new new wheels, I'd suggest Orson Equipment near Birmingham. No website, but the phone number is: 01384 241717. I've found them to be cheaper than most (Moss, MGOC, SC Parts, etc), and very helpful to boot. Either way, with the (I'm guessing) 120Bhp+ you've got under your bonnet, more rubber will help with cornering, stopping and also reduce the amount of you melting the rear tyres ;-) Good luck, enjoy te sound of that blower and have fun on the track! It sounds like new tyres are in order for sure just because of age. For future track days you might want to consider finding a set of TR6 wires with some 185 tyres. Shouldn't be terribly expensive for the wheels used and the 72 spoke, 5.5" rim width will really help on the track. |

The best fit for your rims would be 165 or 175. I'm sure you want more rubber on the ground so you could push it to 185. You will get a little sidewall flex at that width but if you keep your pressure up it shouldn't be a problem. A 65-series profile will also help control flex and keep the rolling radius down. |
