MG MGA - No resistance on clutch push rod in MC
I have a '58 MGA. I removed the master cylinder to paint the engine bay and now am re-installing. The clutch pedal is going to the floor w no pressure. I can push the clutch push rod into the master cylinder with no resistance on push rod. Have I failed to set the push rod into the MC properly or is it possible that the piston is stuck back and will not come forward? If so, how do I release the piston? The MC is only about 5 years old. |

When there is air in the system there will be no pressure to return the master piston, so it can easily get stuck down the bore. Reverse bleeding can be your friend here. Use a Mityvac or a trigger pump oil can to pump fluid into the clutch slave bleed nipple. This will force air upward to the reservoir, and back pressure in the line will force the master piston forward in the process. When you are finished there will still be a little air trapped in the slave cylinder, but a little normal forward bleeding will get that out easily. |
