MG MGA - Offset and Alloy rims
After much research and debate I’ve decided not to convert to wire wheels : ( . But since my stock steel rims are not in great shape, time to upgrade to “minilites”. Problem: it seems no one makes any alloy wheels with the proper offset (+35mm -/+) {3.75”-2” = 1.75” x 25.4 cm/in = 3.49cm =34.9mm} Closest I can find are +22mm panasports 15x6 or +16mm panasport 15x5.5. I know the SAAB 900 had some that were close , but they are getting rare and condition is questionable. Anybody know where I can find some alloy rims with the proper offset? OR Anybody have a set of +22mm on their MGA with success? Photos would be great. Old threads don't help much Any input is appreciated -cheers Bruce |

How is the offset on the Realm engineering D-Type Jaguar knock offs? |

Bruce, I don't know the offset numbers but I'd give Hap Waldrop a call at Acme Speed Shop http://www.acmespeedshop.com/index.html He's an importer for Superlite wheels (Australian made) and both his expertise and the wheels come highly recommended. I'd be surprised if he can't find the proper fit for your car. |

Thanks Bill, I have the superlite on the list, their best fit is a 15x6 24mm offset. I'll have to call to see how successful these have been on MGAs. Also there seems to be a couple of ways to measure offset which is frustrating. 1 method I get 35mm and the other I get 22mm, hmmm. I guess word of mouth is the best method in this case. Hopefully more alloy users will voice in here..hint...hint. -Bruce |

Bruce, I have had two MGA's with minilites. One was the 'Moss' supplied 15x5.5" w/ 195-65R15. I can't recall the offset but they were nearly flush with the wheel opening. They had more of an aggressive look vs the stock 15x4" steel wheel offset which put the original rim a few inches into the wheel well. I also have 15x5.5" Saab Shelby's w/ 195-65R15's and the offset puts them inside the wheel opening. The +1.5" width is actually 0.75" inward to the frame and 0.75" outward and everything fits ok. I mean ok since having a front swaybar in the original location will rub the tire after a little more than one full rev of the steering wheel. I am planning to move it down under the frame to gain a little more travel. I doubt you will find an aftermarket wheel 4" wide or one that will place the rim face in the 'proper' original location. I love the handling gains produced by the wider radials. The overall weight is about 5 lbs more for each wheel and produces a 'heavier' steering vs the original setup. I believe the stock TR6 rims will fit and they position the rim face close the Moss minilite location (flush w/ fender). Sorry no pictures since they are all on the office PC. |
