MG MGA - offset cam key
I'm in the process of assembling the rebuilt engine and doing the static timing. The camshaft is new, stock grind. How would I determine if I need an offset key for the cam sprocket? Thanks, George |

George. You should dial in the cam and see what it is reading. This requires a dial indicator, with a magnetic base, and a crankshaft protractor. The latter is available from many of the usual suspects. There are commonly inexpensive dial indicators and magnetic bases available from ENCO and MSC. You will want a magnetic base that allows you to position the dial indicator vertically. As to the exact procedure, Peter Burgess covers it his book on the B series engine. You could, most probably, also find instructions and/or videos on the internet. Les |

Most of the factory cams I've dealt with are very good as far as being spot on and no adjustment is necessary. Having said that, any cam grinder CAN mess it up so it is nice to verify that you are withing spec. |

George, if it is standard timing, in the WSM it says the No 1 inlet should open @ TDC with a 60 thou tappet clearance. |

I cover it on my site - http://www.octarine-services.co.uk/opencart/enginebuilding.htm see 5. degreeing the cam |
