MG MGA - Oil collecting in the rubber clutch boot
Hey Guys, I just took the clutch slave cylinder off and while i was there I saw some oil coming out between the rubber boot and the clutch lever, when I pulled the rubber boot off there was a good teaspoon of oil in there. Where's this coming from and is it a problem? |

If you mean the boot on the cylinder, it's hydraulic fluid and the cylinder needs a kit or you should replace it. If you mean the boot that surrounds the lever where it goes into the bellhousing, it's probably coming from the gearbox front seal, or the rear of the engine - Is the drain hole in the bottom of the gearbox bell housing clear? |

I was thinking that it would probably be the front gearbox seal. Gearbox oil could run along the input shaft, and drain down the throwout arm into the rubber boot. Engine oil would have a longer path, and should normally drain out the bottom of the bell housing. However, like Dominic said, the drain hole could be blocked. |

Thanks guys, Dominic its the boot coming from the bell housing. There is a hole that has a cotter pin in it in the bottom of the bell housing is that the drain hole? The cotter is put in from the inside and spread apart on the outside.... |

Yes that is the drain hole |

The cotter pin is supposed to be there. It doesn't fasten anything, but I think it is supposed help the oil drain out the hole. |
Jeff Schultz |
The cotter pin is supposed to be free, so that it can rattle around and keep the hole free from blocking up. It's a response to the old conundrum: The smallest hole will drain the largest of containers, but the largest hole meant for drainage will block at the first opportunity! |
