MG MGA - oil cooler
Half way between my engine and the oil cooler, the pipes go through a small unit that is fitted to the inside of the wheel arch. Is this a thermostat or what? |

If the unit has an "H" pattern with four hose connections, it would be a thermostatic valve. This is supposed to allow cold oil to bypass the oil cooler to help the oil warm up quicker or not be over cooled (similar to the engine coolant thermostat). See picture. There are no specific port designations on the valve, as it doesn't care which way the oil goes through. Both sides are straight through with little or no obstruction. The cross over port in the center is open when oil is cool. The valve shifts at 80dC to close the center port and force all oil through the oil cooler. If you have one of these installed on an MGA, I would like a picture of it. |

This is the Mocal oil stat I have installed. It was bought from Europa Spares here in the UK. The oil cooler is an MGB type and mounted on top of the panel in front of the radiator. I have been taken to task for fitting the oil pipes with jubilee clips but have had no leaks in the 10 years or so it has been fitted. One of these days I will get round to repainting the engine bay but that would mean taking the car off the road for a while. Malcolm |

Nigel, -- What is the brand name on that valve? |

"Stop that drip with a Jubilee clip!" My engine bay doesn't look any better, it's all hidden once you close the lid! |

Barney,- Serck Speed Lindsay - it was tightening that jubliee clip that started this thread! |
