MG MGA - Oil Filler Cap Variations?
The cable attaching the filler cap to the valve cover on my 1500 is broken. I have a spare valve cover from a 1600 engine with a good cable. However, the cap styles are different. The hand grip on the 1500 style is thicker (wider?) and and the "ridges" on the grip are not as pronounced as on the 1600. Looking at suppliers parts catalogs it appears that only one style of cap is available. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Can just the cable be replaced? Thanks, GTF |

If I remember right, the two are interchangeable. Be glad you don't have an MGB where there are AT LEAST THREE TOTALLY DIFFERENT OIL FILLER CAPS: (1.) Pre-Smog Control Cap (Vents to the air through the "hole" where the wire is attached), (2.) EARLY Smog Control Cap (Vents to the air through a BUILT-IN FILTER), and (3.) LATER Smog Control Cap that is TOTALLY SEALED, with VENT HOSES RUNNING FROM A FITTING ON THE VALVE COVER TO A "CHARCOAL CANNISTER" THAT COLLECTS THE FUMES! NONE of these is interchangeable, and if they DO get "MISAPPLIED" you will have a VERY ROUGH RUNNING ENGINE! |
