MG MGA - Oil Filler Cap wire replacement
I want to replace the wire in my oil filler cap which retains it to the rocker cover but I'm not sure if its possible without ruining the whole cap. If I drill out the the rivets inside will I ruin the cap or can I just replace the rivets. Anyone done this job and have some advice? Tks John |

I just did this on my engine. I did not drill out the rivets holding the spring clip. I fitted a piece of choke inner cable initially, but found I could not solder it, and it was a bit too stiff. So I changed the wire to more flexible stranded copper wire. On one end of the wire I soldered a small earth lug (with round hole). I drilled the cap centre hole to 1/8 inch, and fixed the lug with a pop rivet. I did not tighten the rivet fully so that the lug could still rotate. I had to file the end of the nail to get it flush and smooth. On the other end of the wire I put a blob of solder, which I then slipped into the slot on the valve cover neck, and with some pliers I was able to close up the slot so the wire was trapped. I have a photo of the finished arrangement which I will post later today. The original rivet is still inside the cap, but I don't think it will rattle too much! Peter. |

John, when I installed my new cap I broke the side of the slot on the valve cover and ended up having to do a small tack weld between the end of the wire and the side of the slot. Worked great. Andy |
