MG MGA - oil filter list

Has anyone started a list of reccomended filers for A's as yet? Here is one that was taken out of a 1500 motor we have had in storage for 20+ yrs, APCO #AF-952, has anyone ever heard of it and is there a list of filters that I could reference on line thru the BBS? TIA sara

Sara,

If you still have the hanging canister, Moss sells both paper and felt. I prefer the paper but have no real reason to prefer it over the felt...just a little less messy at changings. Moss # 950-030

Does anyone know what model the spin-on filter comes from (GFE166) so I can get them locally instead of from the MG suppliers?

The GFE 166 filter is from a (real) Mini.

Thanks Malcolm - Could you elaborate as to whether it is from any particular engine or year? Or for all "real" minis?

The early ones of course had a replaceable cartridge element.

I'm not sure when they changed to a spin on type but GFE 166 covers all engines from then up to 1997. I think that was when the Mini went over to fuel injection.

I have been using a Moss adapter for about 10 years. The only filter that fits without leaking, and I have tried many, is the NAPA Gold 1516.

Dave, is your spin on mount like the one Moss currently sells, which replaces the original mount, or is it like the one they used to sell, which mounts below the original filter mount? Reason I ask, is back around '92 I bought the earlier style conversion mount from Moss, and the filters they supplied for it are Unipart GFE 148. NAPA's website gives an equivalent filter number of 1374. The adapter and one filter have been mounted to the rebuilt original engine, in a crate since then, waiting for the restoration that I am finally getting around to starting. Just trying to figure out if the new and old style adapters take the same filters. I'll probably just take a unipart filter down the road to NAPA and compare with a 1374 and a 1516 when I get a chance.
