MG MGA - Oil For Gearbox and Diff
I need to start afresh and change the gearbox and Diff oil in my 1962 MGA as I don't know what oil is in them or how long it has been there. Can someone tell me what I should be using and also the quantities. Thanks George |

George, I assume that you still do not have a Workshop Manual. While you are looking for one you can download a Manual from Barney's website. You just need to download the "General Data" section. The Manual will give the capacities in Imperial Pints (Australian Pints) Mick |

Thank you for the info, waiting for manual to arrive. Regards |

I believe you should source a GL-4 gear oil, not the widely currently available GL-5. Better for the brass parts. Gearbox and diff. only. Brian W. |

Brian Standard MG gearbox oil is (as Barney correctly writes) 20W50 engine oil, not GL. but if you have a five-speed, then it is 90EP. Barney omits the capacity of the standard MGA box, which is 2.5 litres all the capacities are listed in the picture |

Great information Dominic. Thanks |

Originally the oil in the gearbox was non-detergent type which I still use in my MKII. I don't know why but I am operating on the "an't broke-don't fix" principle. |
