MG MGA - Oil gallery plugs

Hi all, my 1600 engine is now back from machine shop and I need to plug the various oil galleries and other plugs (9 No) I have some gallery plugs but my question is would it be okay to obtain brass rod of the appropriate thickness cut to length add a slight taper and hammer in? Thoughts welcomed many thanks Mark. ps block was definitely in need of a very thorough clean out.
