MG MGA - Oil leakage
My new addition of the 57 MGA has me wanting to investigate a few oil leaks(weeps) while in storage for the winter. Should I start in a specific place? Many tell me MGA's all leak and with Model T's I know and deal with this as needed. I just want to address any issues that I can and would like to start with the basics. Thanks for your input. I can upload photos if of value. |

Hi NK. Yes, MGA's do often leak oil. THe most common points of leakage are from the crankshaft rear "seal", the rocker cover, the tappet chambers, the oil pan, the front timing cover seal, and the oil pan plug. A careful visual inspection of these areas can sometimes help pinpoint a leak. If not, then degrease your engine, and then watch carefully for fresh oil leaks. Leaking gaskets are usually an easy fix, either by retightening loose bolts or replacing a defective gasket or gaskets. A leaky rear oil seal can mean a lot of work and expense, pulling and dismantling the engine, and having some machining done, or even replacing a badly worn crankshaft or block. Hopefully your leak will turn out to be loose bolts or a few bad gaskets. Best of luck, Glenn. |

Thanks Glenn for your thoughts on this. I plan to clean the undercariage and try to see the areas that are leaking. |
