MG MGA - oil pressure flex hose
Recently order a replacement oil pressure flex hose that fits from the lower block to a upper bracket. The one I received does not fit, threads are to small. Im trying to reach Moss for a replacement but want to know if anyone else has had the same problem or is there something I'm missing |

Does the new hose differ from the one you are replacing? There are two different lengths - one for MGA and one for MGB, but they both have the same fittings, and both can be used on an MGA. Be aware that these new hoses, made in India I believe, are known to fail very soon after being fitted. Peter. |

I just fitted one from Moss myself. How long have I got? And who supplies a decent one? Art |

The current block to oil pressure gauge rubber hoses have had a bad reputation of quite some time. This website: http://www.motorheadltd.com/bad_parts.htm has a list of the parts they have found to be bad. And, they offer a custom made hose using, last time I checked, the fittings from your old hose. While expensive, the cost is not excessive if the choices are a good, long lived hose vs. a hose of unknown quality which, when it fails, fills the engine compartment with oil and may cause a complete engine failure. I know which I would use myself. Les |

Thanks for the link Les. |

I take the old fittings to a hydraulic hose company and have new hoses fitted. They can supply stainless steel braided coverings to replicate the original. Barry. |

I had this hose fail last summer. Fortunately I caught it within a mile... I smelled burning oil and suspected the car in front of me was having a problem until I noticed I had zero oil pressure. Other than the indignity of being flat bedded home and significantly soiling my local Dunkin Donuts parking lot there has been no lasting effects. The failure was catastrophic and there was no way to forsee this coming since the hose is enclosed by the braided stainless steel. I have been unable to get a quality hose built locally because the fittings are apparently metric and the local hydraulic hose shops and NAPA are reluctant to reuse the fittings. Brian Denis |

update notes-- both new part from Moss and old part that I removed ( orginal which lasted 15+ years) are the same length and appear to be to be the same part, except the the nuts at both ends are smaller than the orginal part. The nut size on the new part is a 13M and the old part is a Wentworth size 1/4W. The thread size on the new part is smaller and will not thread on. Still no reply from Moss. |

Strange, my Moss hose screwed on easily, and it was recent. |

Sorry , just and FYI the orginal part still had the yellow ban on it with the part information, Smiths Petro Flex R_GD still readable. |

James, If you get e replacement part from MOSS that actually has the correct nuts on it, and you fit it to the car, my guess is that you will get less than 15 months on it. Art, please note. I have known these to fail within a few days of being fitted! So they must have a fault in them from the day of manufacture. Peter. |

Pete, I located my old hose and I'm taking it to a local shop to get new hose fixed to the old ends. Thanks. |

As a follow up FYI, it took a few days for someone from Moss to get back to me concerning the non fitting hose. They tried fitting it on one of their own cars and found that due to a increased thickness in the chrome process that it would not fit. In the mean time i needed one quick and fitted to attend a rapidly apporching car show and purchased one throught Scarrbough Faire which fit perfectly and produced by a different manufacturer, different fittings. I did recieve the new part from Moss, haven't attemped to fit it, and will keep it as a spare. |

I think Cecelia is a treasure! You get the feeling that if someone complained to her of a poor part she would be on the case immediately and the problem would be sorted pretty quick. For Moss I get the impression that they couldn't care less if one of their parts is faulty. I try and avoid Moss as much as possible. Even though Moss are just down the road from me I would prefer to pay the postage and patronize SF................Mike |

I think Cecelia is a thief; deal with her at your own risk. When you get a bad part from her, she will never issue a refund. The current Moss oil pressure hose is supposed to be teflon lined like their braided fuel hoses are. I ordered one from them within the last couple of months, and it looks just like the fuel hoses I bought from them. It will be some time before I am able to fit it, however since my car is still a bare frame (though now a repaired, bare frame ready to go to the powder coater). http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?2,2041050,2041431#msg-2041431 -Del |

Del, You keep repeating your opinion which, I understand, is based on a bad experience you had with Scarborough Faire many years ago. In fairness, Cecelia needs some convincing when a part is faulty, or the wrong part has been sent to you, but she will replace it pretty quickly once you have produced the evidence. Why should she issue a refund? Having said that, people have bought thousands of parts from her without a problem with her prices or her product quality. Lastly, she is the only MGA parts supplier who supports NAMGAR and its members by being at every GT with her parts, and makes contributions of prizes, both as parts coupons and cash, for NAMGAR's GT organizer's competitions. If your negative opinion is based on a recent transaction, perhaps you can share details of the circumstances, and the outcome. This would be of benefit to the forum participants. Peter. |

I keep repeating it, and until she sends me my money back and changes her policy, I will keep repeating it. As for convincing her it is faulty, I sent it back at my own expense; I don't know what else I can do. She insisted that it was good, even though it was crudely made, and being a part that is welded to the structure, I was not willing to make it a permanent part of my car. To say nothing of her attitude on the phone. She accepts no responsibility whatsoever for what she sells. Her position was that a part is good solely because that is what she happens to be selling at the time and because she says so. As you say, many people buy parts from her without any problems. So had we,going back many years. But when there is a problem, she is impossible to deal with, or get your money back for an obviously bad part. I don't give a sh*t what she might or might not do for your club, she ripped me off. And I am far from the only one who has had a similar experience. Why on earth would I ever give her another chance to rip me off? |
