MG MGA - Oil pressure gauge line - Australian cars
Hi Guys, I have a quick, possible pedantic, question. In trying to find the correct routing for the oil pressure pipe line (the one that forms several tight coils times under the dash) I read that Australian cars had theses coils under the bonnet (information from “MGA” by John Price-Williams). So I suppose these were visible when you popped the hood. Does anyone (ie. the Aussies) have any more information on this. Thanks. Ben |

Ben, Barry Gannon in Ringwood knows the correct routing for this tube - he told me mine was wrong! He monitors this site so should contact you - if not I will let him know. Regards Mike |

The purpose of the coils under the engine bonnet are to allow for engine vibration and next to the engine by the valve cover. If you had a straight and tight line in the engine, it would break in time and you would loose your oil. Hope this helps |

I thought the norm was an armoured flexible pipe from the engine to a bracket just behind the starter switch. The oil pressure pipe from the instrument screws into this bracket. There is hardly enough room between this bracket and the firewall to coil the copper pipe, but if so, to what advantage? Or are the Ozzie assembled cars that different? Steve |

Ben When you get it I would appreciate seeing what the correct installation is. If you could e-mail me. |

I switched from the coiled pipe to a braided SS hose using an MGB hose and fitting. Works very well for me as I am not a stickler for originality. Cheers, Rich |

Ben, you are correct in stating that the oil pressure line is coiled under the bonnet. I will take a picture when I get home from work tonight and post it on the BBS tomorrow. Regards Steven |

I thought they all here coiled under the bonnet, mine is and its ex UK new martyn |

Ben, I am not sure exactly how to describe it, do you want to meet for coffee? I will show you mine if you show me yours. |

Hi Guys, Thanks for everybody's help. David McFarlane sent me pictures of his beautiful australian built 1600 MKII. The two pictures below show his engine bay with the coiled oil pipe line (one is a close up view). I wonder is this similiar to yours Steven? Thanks again everybody. Is there a definitive answer on the reason for the coils - Jeff, to avoid breakage due to engine vibration is an interesting idea. Ben |

Ben, Attached are some shots from my 2 A's - both 1600 MKI's. In both cases the oil line arrangement is very similar to David's MKII. Regards Steven |

Ben, The picture of Steven's green car above is correct. His red car is not - the coils must stand vertically for concour correctness. Barry. |
