MG MGA - Oil Pump Clearance

My oil pump body to top of the rotors is at .007. Is it ok to hand lap the body to .005 ? How far below the .005 can I go and still operate ok? After lapping should you use any type of sealer on the two parts ?
Thanks Gary

Hi GL. Yes, it is OK to hand lap the oil pump body. Make sure you lap it on a dead flat surface though, such as a piece of thick glass, or a cast iron table saw table. Set the sheet of abrasive sandpaper on the flat surface, grit side up, and then rub the pump body over the abrasive material. Make frequent checks to insure you do not remove too much material. Clearance should be .005 inches. This is the clearance the manual suggests, and personally, I would stick to it. I dont believe any gasket or sealer for this application is mentioned in the manual. Cheers! Glenn PS there is a gasket between the oil pump body and the engine block though.

Five thou is still quite a clearance ans I see no difficulty with reducing this. The oricinal clearance may have been quite difficult to maintain in production 40 years ago so why ask for something when you know you cant achieve it consistently. Hand lapping on a one off basis is another matter and I would go for .002/.003 but no less than the 2 thou limit. No gasket and no sealer.
