MG MGA - oil/water gauge thermocouple thread size
Got a question regarding the tapped hole size in the 1500 MGA head for the water temperature thermocouple. I want to plug the hole and send the gauge out for repairs. While repair is being done I'm going to buy dual gauges (water & oil temp) so I can keep on driving.. Hopefully is not a BSF thread.. I think its a straight thread not tappered.. This is my everyday driver so need to drive the 20 miles to town to buy new gauges. thanks Mike |

Hi Mike The thread is common in all 'A' and 'B' series engines, an electrical temp sensor from a Mini or MGB will suffice Terry |

It is not a thermocouple but a capiliary temp, I am pretty certain the thread is 3/8 BSP parallel. Not 100% certain it is 3/8ths but am absolutely sure it is a BSP parallel thread. |

Mike - The good news is that the thread is not BSF. The bad news is that it is 3/8 BSP. BSP threads are parallel threads unless otherwise indicated. If you cannot find a plug or another, unused threaded collar for the temperature sensor bulb, e-mail me and I'll go through my junk ans see if I have one somewhere. I also have a 3/8 BSP die and can modify a standard American pipe plug to fit. Cheers - Dave |

Mike, I was able to find a lot of BSP fittings at a local hydraulics supply shop. You might check your phone book and call around a little. I have also seen at some auto supply stores, expanding rubber plugs for oil pan drain holes that might work for a temporary plug. Jeff |

Japanese cars use the same thread on temp senders. Nissan and Mazda I know because I used a MG temp gauge on a Rx7 engine. Belies their british heritage. |
