MG MGA - Oily Alloy Valve Cover

Hi All,

It's bee bugging me for a while now, I keep getting oil leaking onto the top of my Moss alloy valve cover. I think it's coming out around the oil filler cap, I would have thought it should have had a rubber seal or something but it didn't. I cut some gasget material to make a seal but this didn't really help.

Any suggestions? I'm wondering if I should install a breather tube simular to the original cover.

Roy.

Roy, my Moss cover has a cork gasket in the filler cap, it leaks anyhow. Not a large amount but enough to leave some oil in the grooves of the cover. A square o-ring may solve the problem but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I had a similar problem when the DPO put a non-vented valve cover on my car, which is supposed to have a vent.

I was thinking of putting a rubber seal on it but now I think I will drill in a vent also.

If you have a lot of oil coming out of the vent cap you most likely have a lot of blow by around your piston rings. Take the cap off and run the engine, if see or feel a lot of pressure or it puffs like a old steam engine. This suggests to me bad rings and (or) valve guides.
