MG MGA - Old Speckled Hen
The Pig and Whistle on Geary St. in San Francisco serves Old Speckled Hen on tap. How cool is that? |
David Holmes |
David Excellent. For those who do not know the MG connection see here: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/speckled_hen__the_mg_beer.htm Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Tell them not to serve it below 15 deg. C and preferably nearer 20. Mike |

How you guys can drink "hot" beer I don't know! Here in Oz, anything over 5deg.C is too warm. Yes, we too have OSH on tap, and it is served cold. |
Gary Lock |
Gary, where?? |

When I first arrived in London in the late 90's I would send beers back if they were not freezing cold. The bar men (most of whom were Ozies themselves in those days) would look at you like a foreigner. Nowadays I drink the warm pints with the best of them. Not keen on OSH though... London Pride is much nicer...and the new Fullers Honey Dew is quite drinkable too. http://www.fullers.co.uk/rte.asp?id=46 3 degrees max today, so cold beer is not a necessity like back in Oz. Every MGA job can be related to the number of beers it takes to complete !!! Enjoy Mark |

Proper British beer is like the finest of red wines and should be drunk at just below room temperature. Mark's influence is now showing though and a lot of pubs are overcooling beer. The real trouble is that most so called beer is now made by international conglomerates whose main business is selling industrial alcohol to teenagers. |
Malcolm Asquith |
Ale, as oppose to lager, is traditionally served at cellar temperature - about 12 deg centigrade I believe, not room temperature (as this varies with season). The colder food and drinks are, the less well we can taste them. Maybe that's why the better beers need not be served ice cold! Each to his own and drink how and what YOU enjoy! Cheers! |
Neil McGurk |
I found a pub in Huntsville, AL that serves OSH. Needless to say, I've been there and will certainly be going back for more. The owner is an ex-rocket (NASA) engineer who wanted something to do. I'm helping him achieve his dream. Cheers - Dennis |

When I lived in Florida, I got the barman to put my non-American beer in the microwave to warm it up. I have never understood why you guys in the USA think that Budweiser or Miller qualify as "beer" either. Just to throw a red rag to you all! |

This is my MG Picnic Box. Jim |
Jim Ferguson |
Jim, Isn't your flag upside down (see image)? Can our UK members confirm? The flag flown upside down is a distress signal. Maybe after a few beers you might want it that way. Mick |
M F Anderson |
David, it was early last year in Brisbane I think, the new English pub down at the Brisbane River waterfront area...they were trialling it, so don't know if it became permanent. It's not really my favourite beer anyway, but I have a Old Speckled Hen bar pull sign attached to a rod that I used to keep the bonnet of my MGB GT open at concours. |
Gary Lock |
Mick absolutely correct, wide white band uppermost on the left (or at the flagpole, I believe). It is surprising how many British people are unaware of both the orientation of our flag and its' name, the "union flag" and not the "union jack". |
Neil McGurk |
Mick Yes, that looks right, including the box for you guys down under. Gets you thinking about a bit of stylising. Found this boot (trunk) conversion. Could well be worth doing mine. Not much use for anything else. Perhaps section-off half the fuel tank as a beer keg or design a spare wheel-shaped keg. Install a second SU as a back-up to the pump pull. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
I've found a few places in Chicago that serve it on tap, which surprised me. |
Mark J Michalak |
I've always heard that you Brits drank warm beer because you have Lucas refrigerators... In my igloo, I use the refrigerator to keep my beer from freezing. Ken |
k v morton |
Steve, Now what good is that conversion? It might look nice, but with only 2 spark plugs kept in reserve?? I think that the tool area is only an afterthought. That is a mobile bar and nothing more. :) |
Mike Parker |
Steve Gyles generously gave me this OSH beer pull. It is given a regular workout, albeit attached to the wine corking machine in my dining room. Barry |
BM Gannon |
Barry, I assume you mean a wine uncorking machine! Mike |

A few years ago, when I worked for a company that traded with the US government, and I had to occasionally fly to Our Nation's Capitol, there was a liquor store a few blocks from the White House, between our K Street office and the hotel I always stayed at (across the street from the CBS bureau). Besides the vicarious enjoyment I got from visiting my tax dollars, I could always bring home a 6-pack of Old Speckled Hen from that liqour store. Thankfully, I no longer work for those parasites, AND, Speckled Hen has finally made it across the continent to Puget Sound! A story with a happy ending. |
David Breneman |
Mike I had the opportunity with Barry to tour a number of vineyards around Victoria, buying up many gallons of wine straight from the vat - plus the odd sample! It could well be a corking machine in the photo. You should see his cellar! Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Latest wine glass development from Australia. Could also be used with beer I guess. Steve |

On a trip to the Cape Cod British Car Club, I found they held all their club meetings at pubs that were a chain called "The British Beer Company". Of course, they serve Old Speckled Hen on draught. Their beer menu can be found here: http://www.britishbeer.com/menu-beer.asp?p=6 |

The upside down Union Jack is also a feature on the original Le Mans Blower Bentley's. If it means a distress sign the reason is obvious on these beasts: http://www.autointell-news.com/european_companies/rolls-royce-bentley/bentley-history/4-5-litre-Blower-Bentley-390.jpg http://www.carsuk.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/bentley-blower.jpg |

It is also incorrect on the Targa Florio winning Mercedes of Stirling Moss, but with the attached photo it may be a later posed photo and due to the well known sense of humour that Germans have! Mick |
M F Anderson |
At least our BBS gets it correct. On those other incorrect photos, of course the flag is correct if the flag pole was on the right, but the convention fo showing flags is to have the pole on the left. Mick |
M F Anderson |
I always remember it as the little red lines are pushing it around counter-clockwise. :-) BTW, Mick, here in the US, the convention on a "moving object" (a soldier's uniform, an airplane, etc.) is to show the flag as if it is streaming off behind the direction of movement. So an insignia on the right side of the machine or person would show the flag "backwards". |
David Breneman |
David, So the other side would show it streaming rearwards from a "pole" on the left. One of life's mysteries solved. Mick |
