MG MGA - On the road to Pocono

On the road again! Early Thursday morning (less than 24 hours from now) my son Elliot and I will be taking the red MGA (with black trailer in tow) heading east from Naperville, IL. The first day Thursday only) we will be traveling with a friend in a white MGA. We have a short morning stop in the sticks off US-30 near Hanna, IN, to visit my brother. We will be in Bowling Green, OH, momentarily in early afternoon at Snook's Dream Cars - http://snooksdreamcars.com
By early evening we will be in a campground in eastern Ohio at OH 303 and OH-57, just southwest of Cleveland.

Friday we will be high-tailing it solo heading east on I-80 to arrive in Pocono Manor, PA, hopefully around 3 pm. We will be grounded there from Friday evening to Sunday morning for the MG Drive In festivities. - http://www.mgdriversclub.com/upcoming/drivein11.html

Sunday we will be expressing it up I-380 and I-81 to Syracuse, NY, then west on I-90. By mid afternoon we will be pitching tent at Niagara Falls Campground (Good Sam Park) - http://www.niagarafallscampground.net
We intend to spend the rest of the day at the Falls, then back to the campground late night.

Monday morning we expect to spend a little time on the Canadian side of the Falls, then head west on the QEW, C-2. C-403, C-401, arriving London, Ontario, by mid afternoon, checking into London/401 KOA. - http://koa.com/where/on/55210
Elliot visits a friend in London while I have time to kill. Anyone in the neighborhood?

Tuesday we head home via C-401 to Windsor/Detroit, then likely express on I-94 west through Michigan (unless something interesting can distract us), around the lake through Indiana and back into Illinois. We expect to be back home by Tuesday evening.

With a few side trips and a bit of run-around this might make about 2000 miles in 6 days. I should be able to check e-mail and BBS during the trip, likely late night daily. Otherwise keep the messages short for a while. See you on the road.

Most importantly, and what Barney forgot to tell everyone is that his trip,to the Poconos is to receive The Cecil B. Kimber Award 2007. This award is given each year,by the MG Drivers Club, to a person who best personifies MG culture and commitment.

It was thanks to the members of this board and their votes that we were able to honor Barney ,with this award, for all of his help and assistance.

WELL DONE MR. GAYLORD. Truly well deserved.

Greetings from Pocono,

So far so good. Had a 10-min pit stop on side of road in Indiana early Thursday to do the quadrenial broken throttle cable change. Stayed with friends in Eastern Ohio Thursday night. Arrived Pocono Mannor PA Friday 4:30pm, just a little late due to bad traffic for interstate repairs. At least in time for dinner, and to meet a few new Brit car friends.

MGA is getting 24.2 to 24.6 MPG hauling trailer @70-75 MPH, as long as I keep an eye on top end of the temperature gauge. Going for Hill Climb in a couple hours, followed by Road Rally, then lunch, car show in afternoon, banquet in evening.

Tom P. -- Will be flying through (or around) Bimghamton on Sunday a.m., whenever we get there leaving Pocono Manor at 9am (latest). We could stop long enough for brunch. Got a place to meet near the interstate?

Michael H, -- All set for meet in London ON Canada on Monday afternoon/evening, maybe all night.

Luckily the BBS works better than sending e-mail from remote locations. Catch you all later.

We're BACK. Greetings from Naperville, Illinois (of all odd places). After traveling through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, it's good to be home.

For the Saturday events in Pocono we decided to leave the trailer with a heritage attached to the MGA with an attitude, just for effect. We managed fairly well running the hill climb, which took about 10 minutes. Pushing a steady 30 MPH up a steep winding hill against the clock with trailer in tow was a bit challenging to say the least, but maybe we needed the handicap. Then we managed to turn a two hour road rally into a four hour enduro. I don't recall how many miles, but it was considerably more than planned with a lot of backtracking and a refueling stop to get us to the end. Somewhere in mid rally we paused to assist a TVR V8 with a very dead battery, applying jumper cables and my new 70 amp alternator to recharge it for 15 minutes, plenty enough to get him back to the hotel.

After a very quick lunch we hit the car show where it was forbidden to wash the cars after the rally but encouraged to bribe the three judges (who had the liberty to add some points to your car at their discretion). You wouldn't believe the amount of money that was attached to engines and wiper blades of many of the 90+ cars on display. Apparently they raised more than $1000 for a children's charity.

Special grins for the Pirates from the Cap Cod British Car Club for an entertaining afternoon and evening. I managed to crash their party in the bar for a half hour Saturday evening before they realized who I was, after which I was liberally plied with alcohol until time for the awards banquet.

Find attached photo indicating the reason for the trip to PA, the Cecil Kimber Enthusiast Award for 2007 from MG Drivers Club of North America. Richard Miller was slathering it on rather heavy in process of presentation, so I felt it appropriate to "thank the little people" and mentioned all the MG enthusiasts who have asked questions and prodded me on to post tech pages and the thousands of people who visit my web site. And of course special thanks to all the folks who jumped in to nominate me for this award. It is truly awe inspiring to see such personal support.

Heading north from Pocono on Sunday we took a slight detour to a state park near Binghamton, NY, to crash a picnic with a couple dozen MG enthusiasts. Sorry we had to cut out before lunch, but we were intent on making Niagara Falls by early evening. Then headig west on I-90 we got plastered by a downpour about 20 miles short of Niagara. I wouldn't mind getting a little wet, but then we couldn't see the car in front of us any more (with no tail lights), and then he (and maybe everyone else) suddenly slowed down to less than 40 MPH on the interstate, at which time we felt it appropriate to duck under a opportunistic bridge to put the top up. Scratch plans for camping and find a motel room, but then enjoy getting very wet at the Falls both before and after dark (even when it wasn't raining).

Top down again on Monday we crossed the border into Canada with not much problem, then proceeded north and west to London, Ontario and pitched the tent at a KOA. Elliot had this opportunity to visit a friend of his in London. I had a few hours to kill, so proceeded to burn up a half tank of gas and 120 miles of some nice Ontario side roads. With perfect rally timing I got back spot on for a 6 PM appointment with more MG enthusiasts, including no less than three more red MGA, one MGB, and something else unmentionable. We drove 15 miles south around Rt-3 for dinner at a wonderful pub. Kudos to a half dozen more friends (some new some not). A cool night snoozing in the tent was nicely refreshing,

Tuesday was generally uneventful, other than a 45 minute traffic delay crossing the border at Sarnia, soon followed by missing an interstate exit in Michigan where we needed to refuel. Oops. The next exit had a tiny town with no gas station, so we found ourselves exercising super economy mode for several more miles to avoid running on air. All is well, back on track and flying along mostly 75 MPH for the rest of the trip through Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois (even doing 70-75 with traffic through the 55 MPH zones for the last 50+ miles). Still getting 24 MPG even at that speed with the trailer.

We have just clocked 2015 miles in 5-1/2 days. What put us over the top was the three hours of nifty side roads around London with nothing to do between arrival and dinner. The trailer was not unhitched for the whole trip so also chalk up another 2015 miles for the 100,000+ mile trailer (I'll have to add that up later). Lots of fun working on the sun tan, and more to come I'm sure. Until next time, CHEERS to everyone.

Barney Gaylord
