MG MGA - One of my horns is missing!
I have two horns on my MGA, and it used to give a nice off-key sort of sound. Recently, only one of them has been working. I disconnected first one and then the other to identify which was not working. I then swapped the connections round and the same one was no working. Is there anything that I can do to repair the horn? How do I get the bugger out? thanks dan |

If you adjust separate the contacts with a knife blade, this sometimes frees them up (often the contacts corrode together). You do this by removing the screw in the top of the domed cover and you can see the contactsn when you remove the cover. To get them out you have to remove the two bolts that fix them to the chassis or to their the mounting bracket. The way to stop them seizing up is to use them! |

Don't know what the "norm" is for the UK, but over here in the states, we use the horn about once a year, and that's to prove to the inspection examiner that they (it?) still works. Sad, when you think that a properly set-up pair of WindTones gives such a beautiful bleat. For some time, a single horn was standard for the midget line, and you had to pay extra for the pair! I have been sans a high note horn since I bought my A. Anyone have a spare with a bracket?? I had a set of these mounted to my MGB and really enjoyed them. Once you clean the contacts you might try some di-electric grease on them and on the connectors. Works great here where EVERYTHING corrodes, molds, and mildews. |

This one may not bring a great price. Search ebay with "lucas red horn", it's probably the only one right now..or ever. Ugly, but may work. I couldn't really tell if it was a high or a low pitch from the pics. But it's a wind tone. |

Alec Darnall sez - "Don't know what the "norm" is for the UK, but over here in the states, we use the horn about once a year..." You obviously don't have many California carpetbaggers in Arkansas. Here in Washington, it's the only way to remind them there are others trying to share the road. (Yeah, bring on the flames! :-) ) |

Nope - no flames from me, and your point is well taken. Just got back from a trip to the Seattle area about a month ago. If California has the "Silicon Valley", you've certainly got the "Silicon Forest", with all the traffic woes that entails. Techies never have much patience, and it shows. I just worry about -my- WindTone vs. -his- Glock 17, ya' know? Cheers - - Alec |
