MG MGA - Original fule pumps
So this friend tells me it is easy to rebuild the fule pump SU. Found Berlin on its website and ordered the kit to fit my original car pump SU. OMG it was like trying to re-assemble a watch. I must have spent 20 hours figuring it all out and cleaning the gas smell away from everything. Now the pump clicks once and wont do any more. Am I just stupid or is this really hard to do? What is wrong? Next I will be rebuilding my original distributor. It needs bushings according to my mechanic. It looks like a pretty simple process according to the pictures in my workshop Blower manual. I think I found the little springs that go in it, how important is it that they be exactly right? I dropped the old ones into some cracks in the floor when I was cleaning it, and they are likely in China by now. Found some in ebay that look just the same although the little clip ends of the spring are a bit off, but I can bend whose with some jewelry pliers I have. Then I will be replacing the rings on the pistons, as the car smokes and I expect rings will cure it. It looks easy, as I have the install tool for putting the piston back in while arranging the rings to get in there too. One place says use regular oil and the other says non detergent oil. What kind of detergent do I add to the oil, and how much? |

Sam - I suspect that you didn't get the points adjusted correctly - for the simple reason that the points available today are not the same as the original points. E-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and I will send you some updated directions. As for the distributor, you will be way ahead of the game if you will send your distributor to Jeff at advanced Distributors and let him work his magic on them. Contact Jeff at: jeff@advanceddistributors.com Cheers - Dave |

Sam, If you are going to do a ring job do not stop there. Have a good shop check the valve guides and seals. If the car smokes at startup and or on downhill runs with the throttle closed it is sucking oil down the valve guides. MGs are well known for this sort of wear. Good luck, Jim Haskins 1953 TD |
