MG MGA - original relay positions

Hi all,
I'm trying to find out the original location of the relay for twin fog lights installed by the factory. If anyone has a car with this option listed on a heritage certificate, could you please let me know. A picture would be even better!

I'm also looking for the factory installed position for a flash to pass relay on a 1500 body if anyone can help.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark

According to Clausager (p 82) "The flasher relay was mounted to the left of the flasher unit"

Hope that helps

On second thoughts, the flasher relay is not the same thing as the flash to pass relay. Sorry wasn't thinking clearly!

Mark,
I looked at the mga twin cam Workshop Manual on Barney’s website and there is no indication that a relay is used for fog lamps. Am I missing something?

Hi Jim,

If you read any of the MGA parts lists there is reference to a relay for fog lamp and screw, relay to bulkhead. See NC65 and 66.

Jim, -- Yes, you're missing something. You have to look in the Service Parts List where it list the relay to be used with twin fog lamps for North American market beginning August 1958. There is no instruction or illustration to show where the relay would be mounted.

Since it was an accessory part, it may or may not have ever been factory installed, but quite likely dealer installed as part of the accessory kit. It wold be interesting to see if it ever shows up as factory installed (on a BMIHT Heritage Certificate).

Barney,
There were 75 twin cams listed as supplied with twin fog lights from the factory but no easily accessible records for the number of push rod cars. I assume it would be many more than 75 and it's surprising that none have surfaced after my request.

A good place to mount a relay, whether it be for twin foglamps, twin horns or even a headlamp flasher is inside the car on the passenger side (RHD) high up on the vertical bulkhead. If you use a Lucas SB40 (original) relay or even the later and cheaper Lucas 6RA they both have the same fixing hole spacing at 2 3/4" as the Lucas regulator RB106.
Therefore the relay can be mounted on the back of the regulator position using the existing regulator screws.
There is then no need to drill extra holes in the bulkhead.

If you do use an SB40 relay it may be hard to find the terminal cover that was originally supplied (I have only ever seen one on Ebay) and there will be a lot of terminal metal exposed with a risk of shorting. The 6RA is better in this respect if standard insulating covers are used on the Lucar connectors.
But even if you don't have a SB40 terminal cover when the relay is mounted on the back of the RB106 it is well out of the way of potential shorting risks.

And if you ever find the correct siting for the relay you won't have to fill in any spare holes........................Mike
