MG MGA - Oz MGA 1600

Hi there, anyone know how I can check on my first MG....a red A... registered number HNU 165......in Victoria, Australia.

Ronald Begg

Ronald, clarification please. What are you wanting to check on? History of your car? Do you want it inspected?

You can get a Heritage Certificate that will give you quite a bit of the factory shipping information (color, build date, etc.) from the Heritage Motor Centre at http://shop.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/shop/heritage-certificates/index.html.

Larry,
Maybe he left a dollar under the seat and wants to retrieve it? ;)

Or maybe he's checking for squirrels in the wheels!

Sorry I was so unspecific.......I disposed of the car many years ago, back in the sixties.......and only have the local registration number to go by. I would very much like to see if it is still in use.

Maybe a check with our local road authority may produce something?

Ron,I have a list of all MGA chassis numbers that BMC assembled in Australia. Your car was Chassis number 94429, Australian Build number 921 and had engine number 16GAU26428, and was first registered in Victoria on 4th May 1962 as HNU 165.The latest record I have of it, was December 1975 when the registration was changed to IJB 180. Having survived to 1975, there is a good chance it is still around somewhere. You could try VicRoads.

Hi Garry
Seeing that you have this info on hand, I wonder if you could help with my A. It's a roadster, originally from Vic. I bought it a couple of years ago, have refurbished it and drive it regularly. (full resto one day) I believe it is an original CKD car. When I bought it it sported the number plate KKO 347 and the engine had been replaced by a 1500: 15NLA70759. Number on the plate is 8/75330/619. I don't know much about the car's history and would like to find out, if you can help.
Cheers, Matthew

Hi Matthew,
Yes your car is an original CKD car, one of a batch of 12 dispatched to Australia on 18 Sept 1959, assembled about February 1960, and first registered in Victoria with rego number HDC345 on 28 March 1960.
The car was re-registered as KKO347 on 8 October 1969.
The original engine number was 16GAU 6007.
Do you have the original ID plate, if so what colour is stamped on it? Also what is the body number? This info is missing for your car in my records. thanks, regards, Garry

Thanks Garry
Great info. I didn't realise this was available. Now it would be good to chase the ownership history. Perhaps I'll try a new thread.
The ID plate is there and your engine numbers match. The car is/was Carnation Red. Interestingly, the interior trim was a kind of fake crocodile in black. I have not seen any references to this, but I really think it is original.
The body number (on the small plate on the firewall?) is B262 and the number stamped on the firewall, near the fuel line is 1GA 619; I think. It's a little hard to read the first number.
Thanks for your info Garry. Great to know.
Regards Matthew

That number that appears to be 1GA 619 is in fact MGA 619 (see image). This 619 is the same Australian car number that appears after your Abingdon chassis number of 75330. The number "8" is for 1960.

Thanks Mick
Yes, I've seen the great Powerpoint. I did know that 8 was 1960 but didn't make the link with 619 and the car number on the plate. Learn something every day.
cheers, Matthew
