MG MGA - painting the head

Gentlemen:

I'm wondering about something. The previous owner painted the block and all appropriate engine parts MG maroon.

However the block and the head nuts are not painted (I assume that means it was replaced at some time)

Its starting to rust and generally starting to bug me.

Can the head be effectively painted without removing everything from the bloody car. I'm thinking about just taking off the valve cover and perhaps some other tid bits and brush painting it.

What say you?

You should be able to paint it with a brush. Just try not to leave any brush marks or it will look like s***.

Use alum foil to cover the parts you do not want painted. It goes on easy and needs no tape. Or use paper and tape for large areas. The foil will work great to cover your water temp line and things like that. Then you can use spray paint and get a great looking job.

Just don't use the Moss paint, if it gets wet it develops white marks, and needs repainting. Use a high quality enamel of the same colour (available from most good paint suppliers)

I can just imagine the production line back in the 50s. A completed engine with as many parts assembled as possible is sent to the spray booth to be hit with a once over coat of top coat maroon from a hand held held spray gun - no priming. We spend a lot more effort these days trying to get a better finish. Well done.

I went through this phase of ownership for a few years, All my bolts were maroon and other bits were pristine. But with the passage of time, a new gasket here and there and the practicalities of life step in. It does not stop the car being great fun to drive - always keep that in mind.

Tysen, if you brush paint it, take a soft brush dipped lightly in thiner and go over it after the last coat. It will minimize brush marks.

Steve,

Thanks for the touch back on reality!

When I'm zooming down the back road, the paint on the head just doesn't matter so much does it.

Cheers,
