MG MGA - painting Wire Wheels
Can old MGA wire wheels be sand blasted and painted to look good? I see that Moss is offering wheel pint spay cans. Are there other alternative panit sprays that would work OK? Thanks, ali

Yes they can. But be sure to get all the blasting material out before painting.

I used Rustoleum silver--quite close to the right color.

Absolutely! After sandblasting I primed with a brushed coat of OMni Au (from PPG) epoxy primer, followed by spray cans of I forget which silver wheel enamel. Probably should have sprayed the primer but I don't (yet) have a gun. I made up some wooden cones to protect the splines from the sand. You should thoroughly clean out the splines of all old oil and greasy residues before painting, and re-lubricate after the final coat.

Silver Wheel Paint, from the local NAPA store, is a good match also.

Ali, Also consider having them powder coated. I had mine done 4 years ago for $50 each sandblasting and powder coating included (mercedes silver is very close). Have them tuned and any spokes replaced first. Powder coating is very chip resisent so the wheels will look good for a long time. Randy 59 Roadster & coupe

Mercedes wheels paint " code 735 " do a perfect job on mines . You can go to any paint distributor and they can make a spray can for you . MGA 1600MkII 1962 Triumph 5/5 sport single 1936 w/Dustin SideCar (Motorcycle)

If blasting wires, make sure that the splines are protected and throughly cleaned. I have also read on the board that oven cleaner removes the old paint very well and cleans up with water.

Ali, Many people swear that Ford Granada silver, available in Duplicolor, is exactly right. Tom
