MG MGA - Parts MGA vs Metropolitan
Hello group - We are restoring a 57 1500 MGA and have found a fellow that may be parting out several Metro motors and gearboxes. Is there any on-line reference for part conversion ie, is the crank shaft the same, oil fiter assy, distributor etc etc etc. I know the gearbox was a column shift so no remote is used but will any of the internal parts cross over. Any help would be apprectiated. Thx, Ray |

4 SPEEDS ARE STILL IN THE BOX. THEY USED A DIFFERENT REVERSE IDLER AND IT LOCKED OUT FIRST GEAR. |

Not so (I think). I disassembled a Met gearbox once. There was no "locked out" 1st gear, just a simple 3-speeds and reverse. The reverse gear idler was fixed in position. Where one fork in the MGA box shifts between 2nd and 1st, the similar fork in the Met box shifts the bull gear between 1st and reverse. There is very little inside Met gearbox that could be used to rebuild an MGA gearbox, although the outer case may be the same machined casting. The Met engine has pretty much the same bottom end (below head gasket) as the MGA 1500 engine. There is no mechanical tach drive but it could be machined to accept the tach drive parts. The Met cylinder head has very small valves (and lesser porting), not suitable for use in the MGA. The Met intake (single carb) and exhaust is much different and also not adaptable to the MGA. That said, I thing there are a lot of Met short blocks in MGAs today, as I can't imagine where else they may have come from in that sort of quantity. |
