MG MGA - Perspex Windows
Does anyone know of a company that does perspex windows for the MGA Coupe, particularly the rear, in either a single piece or 3 pieces? Alternatively, if I pay for tooling, how many people would want a set? Colin |

Colin, I needed a 3 piece rear window in perspex for my Sebring Coupe and I was able to purchase this from Tony McNailly who races a 1600 coupe and undertook the fabrication of a batch of these in Melbourne, Australia about 6 years ago. They fit quite well. I will email contact information to you off list. Perhaps he can help you out. Frank |

Pardon my ignorance, but what is perspex? Regards, M.D. '57 Coupe |

M.D.-- It's British for lucite / phil |

MD Perspex, Lucite, Acrylite and Plexiglass are all trade names for acrylic sheet. |

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't Perspex a "polycarbonate" plastic, which is more resistant to scratches than regular plexiglass (which is softer)? I was given that option by a local plastic shop when replacing sidecurtain pieces. I wound up going to Todd Clarke for the parts, he even imprints the original Perspex lettering. |

Here you go: Perspex Trade name for a clear, lightweight, tough plastic first produced in 1930. It is widely used for watch glasses, advertising signs, domestic baths, motorboat windscreens, aircraft canopies, and protective shields. Its chemical name is polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). It is manufactured under other names: Plexiglas, Lucite, Acrylite, and Rhoplex (in the USA), and Oroglas (in Europe). 'Lexan' is a polycarbonate. Ian F |

I have to admit that I copied and pasted from another web site. <blush> Ian F |

Ian Thanks for the research. Copying from a web site is OK by me. Accuracy counts and originality has no place in technical matters. Beside, if you are like me and trusted to memory at best we would get a lot of misspellings. Keep up the fine contributions. Jim Haskins 1953 MG TD |

Dominic--- did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?? |

What about Lexan? That's the stuff they make large aquariums out of for strength, clarity and scratch resistance. |
Steve Simmons |
Dominic, thanks for that. Actually Frank suggested some one who had some once!! At this stage he is checking it out for me. Steve, yes Lexan is an option. A more expensive option!! But still the same problems trying to do double curves. The only way to do it properly is to have a former made, and apparently that is expensive. For racing (FIA international) it has to be I think 5mm thick, and is difficult to work. Colin |

Colin Try your local general aviation airport using airport transfers tonbridge maintenance shops. I believe that they have some way to manufacture windshields for various light aircraft. There may be a shop, may even be in your area, that can make the window for you. Definitely go with a polycarbonate with full UV stabilization. FWIW Larry |

Larry, thanks for that. Making the windows is not a problem. I have access to a tame window producer. The problem is making the formers for the double curvature windows. That is why I was trying to find out if someone had already done it. No point reinventing the wheel!! I have been offered a set from Canada. But it will be cheaper for me to have formers made up here in the UK. Then I can offer them around if there is a demand. Colin |
