MG MGA - Pertronic vs Alden

A question for Dominic (or anyone else, of course). You posted a while back on Alden distributors. I thought their site and products looked pretty good, in particular their willingness to provide custom advance curves for supercharged engines. Sounds like you also have experience with Pertronic. Which do you recommend for a 1600 MkII with a Judson ?

OK, just read through some of Tysen's earlier posts and I see that Alden and pertronix are just different distributors for the same unit. Will Pertronix supply custom advance curves too ?

Chuck. You read incorrectly. Aldon Engineering is a company that supplies rebuild distributors and is located in the UK. Petronix is a company that supplies points replacement devices and is located here in the US. Thus the Aldon distributors come as a points type distributor, having their (Aldon's) advance curve. To this basic unit can be added the Petronix points replacement system which replaces the points, but does not afffect either the mechanical or vacuum advance curves.

Here in the US, John Twist has a great deal of experience in distributor rebuilding. Whether he can make up a custom advance curve is something that you would have to ask him. His contact information is found on his University Motors Ltd. website.

Pertronix also offers new replacement distributors, but they don't have one that is designed for the supercharger application. Your best bet is to have yours recurved to suit. You may want to post to the "Supercharger" section for more experienced help. The receommended curve is something like 800-2600 linear with only 6-8 degrees of advance and lots of initial timing.

Les, Aldon also market what appears to be identical to the Pertronix Ignitor, the Aldon Ignitor and Aldon Flamethrower coil. Not sure exactly what the connection is or who owns who.

Hi Chuck

You can either send Aldon your old unit, or buy a used one from one of the UK breakers and have it sent to Aldon directly.

Aldon will then restore the unit completely, and provide a curve to suit your application - hence you have to say what engine and supercharger and cam you are using.

You can also request electronic ignition or standard points. Aldon markets the pertronix unit under its own name.
