MG MGA - Pertronix Ignitor installation

Trying to avoid the debate about the pros/cons of electronic ignition.

As part of the install it requires a connection from the positive terminal on the coil to the chassis, where is a sensible place on the chassis to make this connection? Preference being not having to run a length of unsightly wire around the engine bay.

Thanks

Hi Rob I have a pertronix unit fitted to my 1500 (negative earth). The original white wire to positive side of the coil and the 2 wire from the Pertronix unit also just connected to the coil. Red to positive black to negative. As I say mine is converted to neg earth. Very pleased with the unit.
Hope this helps Paul

THanks Paul, I should have mentioned I am on a positive earth car, which requires a slightly different ignitor wiring setup.

Mine simply connects to the bracket holding the coil.
Referring to your other thread on timing, etc., check the Petronix instructions as static timing with some electronic ignitions can't always be set with a light bulb I believe?

Graham,

You are a genius!! I was having a complete mental block and for the life of me couldn't work it out.

Thanks

Make sure you buy the correct unit for positive earth!

I wasn't sure whether to post on this or your other timing thread. Something in my brain is reminding me that some dynamic timing lights do not work well with certain plug leads (you have to clip one of the light leads around the No.1 plug lead).

I have just checked my inputs in the archives and my light does not work with wire-cored leads, only the modern silicon type. You might want to check out what leads you are using and ensure that the dynamic timing light you select is compatible.

Hey Steve, Yep defo purchased the correct unit, ordered through Moss originally and have also checked the unit number on the Pertronix website, so I think I am all good with that.

I also purchased a new set of HT leads from Powerspark with filters to stop any electrical feedback. In red, to match the car. Fingers crossed that should do the trick. Thanks for pointing that out though, I hadnt considered there would be a difference in the timing light.

With Petronix units it's no problem to set static timing using a light.
