MG MGA - Pesky Leaks...
Hi All, I am tackling all those small leaks in the engine bay. I have a MGB 1.8 engine installed in my MGA Roadster and there is a discernible leak around the thermostat housing. I have sat there and watched the fluid leak from the cork gasket and it is weeping from the nuts on the studs - so travelling up the studs and through the threads of the nuts.. What can I do to fix this ? Thank you |

I would think Holymar Blue will be your friend here? No doubt someone more experienced than me can advise further. |

If it's coolant then I've found Hylomar Hylotyte Red 100 has stopped leaks the Universal blue didn't. (scroll down page) - http://hylomar.com/hylomar-product-range/gasket-jointing-compounds/ Check that it's not your cork gasket too, I've used the Klingersil gasket a few times and find it good, it might just be a placebo effect but as I find small coolant leaks annoying I want things to work first time. |

Take off the housing, clean it all up. If the surfaces are all good, renew the gasket. Period. If the surfaces are corroded, then do as Graham suggests. |

Klingersil gaskets are all I use anymore. I've never had one leak. If the thermostat housing is corroded then replace it as well. If the head surface is corroded, a very thin smear of any quality sealer should seal things up nicely. Use anti-seize compound on the thermostat stud threads inside the cylinder head to prevent corrosion. If you use sealer, be sure to get it around the base of the studs. |
