MG MGA - Peter Burgess
Hi All I am sure that most of the Bulletin are well acquainted with Peter Burgess in Alfreton. For me it was a new adventure I took the A up to him yesterday to arrange a tuning of the car and fitting of an 'Accuspark' electronic ignition which was on special offer from the Owners Club this month for £28. Interestingly although he had heard of them he had not fitted any. He spent 2.5 hours on the car and was pleased as I was with the outcome. My 1600 is fitted with a 1622cc engine which was rebuilt before I bought the car and has now covered just 1000 miles. The report is attached and a video clip of one of his runs on the rolling road. It's a bit scary when he increases the revs and the noise even masked the dog barking! Anyhow, the run back home along the M1 and M69 a journey of 80 odd miles was excellent. I'll report back on any issues encountered with 'accuspark' in case any members are interested. Very impressed with Peter and the charge of £85 was extremely reasonable. For some reason I appear to be unable to upload the pics! Will try again. Jerry |

Jerry, you may need to reduce the megabite size of the pictures before the website can accept them. There are a number of free image re-sizer programmes available to help you do this. I am really looking forward to seeing your pics Colyn |

Is this a postive earth unit or do you have to change to neg.? |
Neil Ferguson |
Thanks Colyn I'll follow that up. Neil when I bought the car it had already been converted to negative earth. I am pretty sure that the system is not compatible with positive earth vehicles. However, I alao have a YT which does have a positive earth. H and H Ignitions in Birmingham (UK) are rebuilding this and installing an ignitor electronic system. I will hopefully be getting this back in the next couple of weeks and can report on progress. I guess that you ought to be able to find a company in Australia who can do this Neil. Sincerely Jerry |

Peter..just went to their website and the units are n eg earth....interested in your reports and I have just read Barney's write up on converting car to pos earth......will probably do it. |

Neil, you can get a positive earth Accuspark electronic distributor in their "Stealth" range (looks like an original 25D not DM2), which I would imagine is much more interesting to anyone who values originality enough to stay positive earth (but still wants electronic ignition). Might go well with the positive earth alternator inside a C45 dynamo casing from dynalite. Changing to negative earth does increase the options though... |

If anyone is going to see Peter Burgess can you ask him when his book "How to Power Tune MGB 4-Cylinder Engines" will be back in print? Mike |
Mike Ellsmore |
Colyn, if you forward me your e-mail address off line then I'll send you the attachments as I have had no success through this system! My address is jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com Mike if you send Peter an e-mail which from memory is peterburgess@hotmail.com(If that's incorrect then just google his mame)he will then be able to let you know directly. All the best Jerry |

Petes book makes for a really interesting read even if most of the cylinder head mods he talks about make me realise that I just dont have the technical skills to even attempt them! I can already visualise myself having to order a replacement cylinder head after I had wrecked the original one. I once tried to re port and tune up a 2-stroke engine (a Villiers 9E motor that I used to use in Racing Karts) I listened carefully to a friend of mine who was a genuis in 2 stroke engine tuning, he could figure out how much to grind out and gas flow ports just by pushing his fingers into them. He could even tell you which carb jet to use just by sniffing the air on the day when I had to use barometers, hygrometers, themometers etc and I still used to get it wrong and seize up the engine. Well I tried to re-port a spare engine barrel and immediately put the grindstone through into a stud hole and wrecked it. So, never again! Would be a great excuse to buy an 8 port head though! Colyn The only downside to the book for me is that Pete pretty much starts with the advice that its really only worth tuning a 5 bearing MGB engine as it is much stonger. Which is a pity as my engine appears to be 2 bearings short! |
