MG MGA - Pinion to Crown Gear Play?

How much play between the pinion and crown is tolerable? I'm getting about .040" total measured at the drive shaft flange periphery. The pumpkin is out so there's no doubt about the source.
Thanks,

Measure the backlash at the edge of the crownwheel, holding the pinion still.

Should be 8 thou - if you have 40 thou on the flange then it is way out!

Thanks Chris,
I know it will exceed .008". Is this the wear limit or correct "new" clearance? Is it true that new replacement crown & pinions are available through Moss UK? They are now all "N/A" in the US.

I believe .008 is the minimum new setting.I have seen .012 on low milage MGB's. .025 on noiesy A's. If yours is greater than .025: check that the 4 antifrictions bearing are all good before obtaining new gear set. You might consider changing to 3.9:1 early MGB set for lower engine rev's/ mile.good luck, Bill.

Thanks Siggi. (Great name!)

W.G.,

That's my plan. I'm trying to score a useable 3.9 pumpkin locally. My pinions and idlers seem tight and relatively unused, so I'll swap them into the B to get the right axle splines. This is all going into a frame off '57 Roadster with an 1800 fove main coupled to a Sierra 5 speed. (The original numbers-matching drive train has also been restored and crated for posterity.)

Thanks,
Doug
