MG MGA - Plugs
Tried to buy a set of Champion N5's only to find they are not avaliable. A cross ref from Champion N5C yielded NGK BR6ES What is the currently favoured plug? |

I only use NGK or Denso. Would not put a champion in a lawnmower. I like the BP6ES. Same heat range (6) no resistor (R) not needed but (P) protruded tip seems to burn cleaner. A BP5ES is the next HOTTER plug if you experience fouling. Repeat: I HATE champions poor quality poor choice of materials. For some reason most of the plugs I see siezed to the heads (aluminum) of the cars we work on are champions. |

I second the recommendation of NGK and also use the BP6ES with no problems. Most of the comments I read say this is the plug of choice for the MGA. |

I have used NGK Plugs in my cars for all my life. The last time I fitted a champion plug it was for my fathers car many years ago. Within a couple of days the idle on his car had become irratic, fitted NGK in place of the Champions and after a year without issue my father had become a convert. On top of that when you next go to a club race event pop to the winners pit and simply ask them what plugs they use. If they are not using NGK I would be very suprised. Like R.J. (and I very rarely agree with Randy :-)) I would not fit champions even in a lawn mower. BP6ES ought to be OK for most B series (and A Series) engines. |

I just ran out to see if it was snowing here in hades. Bob and I agree? Must be a nonpolitical, MGA exclusive, Absolute truth:-) |

I thought I'd be "authentic" and fit Champion N5s, but I too have been experiencing erratic idling which I can't put down to anything else. I wouldn't have considered a new set of Champions causing the trouble had I not read this thread. So I have just been on eBay to order NGK plugs for my A. I have gone for the NGK "partfinder" recommendation of B6ES (yes, they even list MGA in their partfinder!)the non-protruding tip version of the same plug. It will be interesting to see if it cures my problem. I remember having the whole insulator blow clean out of the body of a Champion plug some 30 years ago whilst riding a BSA 650, I wonder what it would have done if my leg had got in the way! |
