MG MGA - Points Help
After years of using quickfit points, I bought a beautiful NOS Lucas set, with contact pads the same diameter, lovely convex surfaces, a thin film of lubricant, all in that brown greaseproof paper. There's no post to pivot on! Of course, quickfits have an integral post. Do I need a new baseplate with a post? Or is there a separate component I can get? [For the moment, I've fitted another quickfit set, which was expedient but disappointing] |

Yep, different base plate. I assume you have a 25D4 distributor, so widely available at least formerly. Possibly from Mini places, because the heavy spring 32oz Cooper S points did not come as quikklick. I seem to recall using only the movable top plate with the early base plate to convert earlier MGA distributors. FRM |

Nick, don't the quick-fit points have a hollow post that slips over the solid post on the base-plate? That's the way the points fit on my distributor. |

Lindsay- Yes, but later points plates (replacement on MGA) deleted the post, after the introduction of the kwikacrap points. I've even seen aftermarket replacements for quiklick points that did not have a hollow centre, so people sawed the post off if they had one. FRM |

Thank you Fletcher, thank you Lindsay. I guess I will leave the quickfit on for now, having got the timing just right yesterday, and I'll investigate a spare parts distributor that's on a shelf somewhere in the garage. After I find it, that is. On timing MGAs - memo to self:- must keep a spare 12v battery in the garage. |
