MG MGA - Police cars
I didn't realise until recently that the MGA was used as a police patrol car in the 50's. Can you imagine todays equivalent, e.g. Z4, or MX5 being used? |

There was a OEW MGA in police livery at the Goodwood Reunion a couple of years ago used as a vehicle for the track steward. Ran a lap before each race to check the track. Should be photos on the Goodwood site. |

That's right Nigel - the Lancashire police used several black MGAs - all driven by women police officers - no sexist comments about parking please.Goodness knows where they kept all stuff they needed - no sexist comments about handbags please . I also believe some of the Welsh police forces used white ones. Cheers Cam |

There is a book on MG police cars called "MGs On Patrol". Also look near the bottom of this page for a couple photos: http://www.lbcnuts.com/mg/historicalmga/ |

Yes I believe either the ex chairman of the MG Car Club or perhaps his brother owns one of these police cars and regularly displays it. Do you know I have seen it many times at MGCC events but can not for the life of me remember if it is white or black. I think it may be black and the white car that is confusing me is another MGCC member who owns a white MGBGTV8 police car. |
Bob (robert) I am coming out!! yes I once owned an MGB!! |
Re - the handbags, they are hung on the choke pull (that where I hang mine !!) Women parking ! what are you trying to say? I wondered why they have solid chrome bumpers and overriders . Steve Gyles - keep quiet Terry |

I have (somewhere) a picture of a TA, passenger side foot area almost filled with what looks like a two way radio. Note on the photo refers to 'bored out police special' Probably quite effective at the time. Local Council in NZ (Lower Hut) had Mini Coopers. Ian F |

Although this is not MGA related, the police in the State of Victoria, Australia used the Triumph TR3A for a short time in 1960. I understand that the MGA was considered, but it had the problem that we all know today, the engine RPM is too high on Highways. The TR3A with an overdrive and low RPM was more suitable for the police Highway Patrol, but the trial was of short duration and the idea dropped. http://www.tr-register.com.au/Files/meatesi.htm Mick |

Nigel, Re today's equivalent: a few years back the City of Baltimore painted up a confiscated Corvette in full police regalia, including a light rack on the top! Not too many speeders could outrun that one. Cheers, Joe |

Joe, A couple of Police departments in the Detroit area have a variety of 'sports' cars as police cars. As a side note, my uncle was a police officer in New York City his whole life, and said that the police departments would use confiscated cars as undercover cars. They would get some pretty hot(fast) vehicles. |
