MG MGA - pops out of gear
My MGA tends to "pop" out of 4th gear while going down hills, in other words when it is not under load. Never does it while accelerating, only coasting. I have never taken the gearchange remote apart, but is that where I should be looking? thanks in advance Mitch |

Mitch Barney Gaylord has a piece on the tranny coming out of third gear. Maybe it's the same problem. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/gearbox/gt202.htm |

Mitch Read the article on this website. It starts with the simple causes and then moves on to the more complex causes. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccz/technic/gearbox/jumping_out_of_gear.htm Mick |

FWIW. An unlikely cause with the standard box but a distinct possibility with the Ford Type 9 5-speed box conversion is the rubber gear stick gaiter pulling the stick back into neutral when you lift the throttle. Happened all the time with me, forcing me to manufacture a leather gaiter. Steve |

Thanks for the "links" guys, hopefully the 3rd and 4th gear problem is the same, just some wear on the shift rod detents. Anyways, its far too nice a day here to be thinking about that.........its time to turn some high test gas into exhaust fumes! cheers, Mitch |

Turns out that it was the "boot" causing my problems. Just a combination of a new boot, carpet cut a bit too close to it and the hole on the top of the tunnel maybe a bit too far forward. Anyways, carpet trimmed, hole relieved a bit and no more problems. cheers, Mitch |

Wow, I got one near the mark for a change. Glad you are sorted Mitch. Steve |

Interestingly enough, my 1969 M.G.midget 1275 (ribcage transmission casing) had the same problem except it was jumping out of 2ND into neutral while accelerating! It only did this on San Diego & Los Angeles on-ramps when I was trying to get up to speed to merge with 80 mph traffic and "holding 2ND" just a bit too long! SCARY! Being a really poor Military guy (Navy),I "juri-rigged" a repair in my car by removing the locating balls & detent springs, and simply stretched the spring out about 30% before putting the same balls & springs back in again! Shifting required a bit of extra "push" for a while until I got used to it. Felt about like a freshly overhauled tranny! Cost me nothing since I was reusing the old parts, and I even made my own gaskets with a ball peen hammer and a "UNION PAPER BAG" smeared with Dow Corning DC-4 Silicone Grease. YOU CAN DO THIS "JURI-RIG FIX" WITHOUT EVEN REMOVING THE TRANSMISSION ON AN 1098/1275 M.G. MIDGET! The fix lasted at least 45,000 miles after which I sold the car. I believe this would work on MGA & MGB, also, and maybe any synchro tranny. |
