MG MGA - possible change of car
hi all, thinking of swapping for a twin cam any thoughts before I commit finanicial suicide gordon |

A friend of mine has recently bought a Twin Cam. He has had the engine in and out about 3 times in 3 months - cracked piston, fitting a crank rear oil seal, new timing chain, etc. If you love working on them, have deep pockets, a garage with a two post hoist, an engine hoist and a sympathetic partner go for it as the smile it brings to his face when he fires it up is worth it. Hi Mike, it's the sympathetic partner bit that worries me lol gordon |

Gordon, No worries, they're perfectly reliable if you only use them for polishing! When you get it you have to come up to the lakes - I'll have a two post lift by then, so I can fix it to get you back home! I would do it if I were you! Have fun, Neil |

You only live once! Do it! If you have a chance to put a check mark in one of your "before I die" columns, why not… you never know when death will come knocking. I bought one as a project, now ten years away, but it will be an amazing car when done. Hope I make it, wouldn't that be a cosmic joke. Live for today, worry about the money later. Don YD 1956 |

Thanks guys it's like reading the memorial column in the Times lol gordon |

The few I know with TC have no problems with them when using the right plugs. If you are just after performance, why not just fit a Supercharger - a 1622 MGA with a SC and suitable cam and head is faster than a standard TC. |
dominic clancy |
Hi Dominic, not really for performance my current car has a 1950 engine with 5 speed box and a 3.9 diff so it goes probably better than a twin cam , just always wanted a twin cam and I have to keep my local MG business going, sorry Tim if you read this, Gordon |

Gordon, Why not just buy the twin-cam engine, and fit that in your car when you feel the urge? With the 5 speed and 3.9 rear end it would be a great cruiser ...... Peter Wood usually has half a dozen rebuilt engines under his bench you could negotiate for, and he spends most of his time rebuilding Spitfires these days (the Supermarine version!!). Adrian B. |

Hi Adrian way beyond ny capabilities and I'm still on drums all round, can't ever seem to get hold of peter woods only ever get an answer phone gordon |

Gordon, If you've always wanted a Twin Cam, buy it. If you later feel that you've made a mistake, I guarantee that you will be able to sell it, and most probably at a profit. |

Go for it Gordon, David Bryant in our club has an immaculate one he rebuilt himself 10 years ago - he has the advantage that he was a Leyland apprentice in the late 1940s and then a foreman in an MG garage - so he maintains his engine in spot on condition. He has even fitted twin Weber carburettors designing his own linkage - it goes like a bomb leaving mine for dead many a time! Unfortunately he is not into computers so is not on this BBS - If you need any advice when you get yours I will get you his contact details. good luck in finding one - cheers Cam |
Cam Cunningham |
Gordon, I would think that you could liquidate your tool collection and have more than enought to purchase a Twin Cam. Go for it! |
James Johanski |
Hi James not sure I'm THAT keen to get a twin cam lol gordon |
g c pugh |

Gordon, My condolences! |

Gordon There is a nice black roadster at Oselli's in Witney, Oxon but its 28k. Repeat 28k! Regards Dave |
D J ROUGET |
Why was that one so cheap?!? Wish I'd bought it. A pal of mine has been cornering the market recently here in the SE, and he says £30K is the right price. Mind you - that's what people who corner markets always say. Go for it, Gordon. Don't let anybody tell you to be sensible. |
