MG MGA - Pressure Plate Failure
Guys, The pressure plate in my 1600 failed. One of the 3 arms that retract the plate fractured. Anyone heard of this type of failure before? Here's the story, the tranny was jumping out of 2nd and sometimes locked in first. I decided to replace is with a freshly rebuilt trans from a MKII. I ordered a new 23 spline disc, throw-out bearing, release lever bushing, pressure plate, etc, etc. The pressure plate is back-ordered, so, to get the car running I used the old one. Everthing went together fine. However, when I pressed down the clutch pedal if felt VERY heavy. I went under the car to check the throw, my son pressed in the clutch several times the activation looked fine. Then I heard this loud metallic click. Turing the flange of the tranny revealed that the clutch was not releasing when the pedal was depressed. Pulled the engine and trans back out and dismantled to find the broke arm. I made a couple measurements on both transmission cases and they appear to be the same. The clutch disc was properly installed. Why would the pedal force feel so high? Its as though something bound up, but I don't see any prolems, except for the broken arm. HELP! Gerry Foster (guess I'm not taking it to opening day at Watkins Glen today...sob.....) |
