MG MGA - Pulley clearance
Just installed new engine mounts. The clearance between the crank pulley dog and the steering rack is still only about 3/16". The dog overhangs the rack by about 1/8" horizontally, and the bottom of the dog is about level with the top of the rack. This seems very close. I was at a show today and a fellow MGA showed the dog about 1/8" back from the rack. What is normal ? I should mention that I have an MGB pulley, but I don't think this makes much difference. The Front and rear mount holes all line up properly. The block is actually a 1622 Austin A60 but again, should be the same. |

Hi Art, Mine is a 1957 1500. I just checked it and I could fit the tip of my baby finger between, which I measured at about 3/8":>) One of the dog hooks happened to be at the bottom and it was slightly above the center of the rack. Maybe different on a 1500 though. Ralph |

when I put the engine back last week I was determined to be able to use the crank handle. The mounts were new last year and the brackets looked fine. Twin cams have a plate for under one mount to fix their problem, I now have two plates under each mount. A bit of an over kill, now too high, but the rubber mounts will sag as time goes by. One each would probably have been ok. From threads, a year or two ago, this seems to be a commom problem with some cars. Sean |

Art My 1800 was the same as you describe. I found that the engine brackets had opened out and closed in respectively. i.e. they were no longer 90 degrees. I straightened them and installed new blocks. This opened up the gap enough between the pulley and cross member to align the starting handle and get the fan belt on. The attached image shows the bent brackets. My engine is now repainted. This was a 'before' photo! Steve |
