MG MGA - Push-in connector for Sports Coil
I'm replacing my standard coil with the Lucas Sports Coil. The existing coil has a screw-in connector, but the Sports Coil is the push-in type. Seems like it would be similar to a spark plug connector. Is it the same? If not, what is the proper fit for it? Thanks! - Ken |

Ken, what you need is item 178 and 179 here http://tinyurl.com/3xcqlu2 Keep your old coil in the trunk as a spare, "Lucas" Sport Coils seem to have a habit of exploding! (see "another exploding coil" in the archive). I don't trust them anymore and have gone back to standard. |

Hi Lindsay, Actually I bought the Sports Coil as part of a full order of the entire ignition chain as I had weak spark. Limped home 350 miles from the Vintage Racing Festival at Watkins Glen last weekend. Replaced the points on the road on the way home, but not good enough. When I got home I ordered all new parts and first replaced the condenser. Problem is apparently solved, but I plan to keep the new coil as a spare in the trunk (boot) and want to have it ready to go. Luckily I had no problems to stop the trip in August to Cape Breton (see picture). BTW, I just ordered one of the steering wheel "gloves" you recommended. - Ken |

Ken, now, when I first looked at the picture I thought "reckless man driving on the wrong side of the road and operating a camera as well"! Then I remembered that you ALL drive on the wrong side of the road, looks fun, must try it! |

Lindsay, Just coming back to this thread and I thought I'd clarify. You were almost right - definitely a "reckless man" and "operating a camera", but it was my wife Melon driving. Being the owner of the car (I am just the mechanic) she insisted on driving the best part of the Cabot Trail. I say I'm reckless, because she drives even more recklessly than I do :). Here is a picture of her and HER car on the "Fundy Trail", overlooking the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick take a couple of days earlier in that trip. - Ken |

That's some serious luggage you've got there Ken. Do you, or should I say, does she keep getting that feeling that someone is following close behind? I do, whenever I've got luggage on the rack, I can't quite get out of the habit of looking in the dash mirror and giving myself a shock! I suppose it might be an idea to put a sock or something over the mirror to stop that from happening! |

On the rare occasions I have anything on the luggage rack, usually the spare wheel, I fit a suction mirror to the top of the screen to aid that rearward view. Not sure it would have any effect in Ken's case! Also, I have yet to try it with my cut down sports screen. Suction mirror may be up for sale. Steve |

My wife and I are quite used to using the convex mirrors on the fenders while driving with luggage. The boot is always full of tools and spares, so any trip of more than one overnight requires luggage on the rack (remember, I am traveling with a woman!) Same was true even back in the 70's, as shown in this picture taken on a weekend trip to Vermont. |

My wife and I travel a bit lighter, but there's a suit and an evening dress there somewhere!

KD, was the policeman thinking 'I'm going to give this guy 5 more minutes before I book him' This is one of those photographs that is crying out for comment - any other suggestions? |

Lindsay - very nice photo! I like the fact that the luggage matches the red of your roadster. Where was that taken? - Ken |
Ken Doris |
Ken, it was taken here http://tinyurl.com/3a6pgp4 on the way home from The MGA Register 'Tour of the North' in Northumbria in May of this year. The weather was a bit different the day before, freezing cold and rain. See the attached picture. |

Here's another picture from the same event. What was the title of this thread?!
|
Lindsay Sampford |
Lindsay - yes we have strayed off topic quite a bit. Probably time to shut this one down and start a new one if we feel it necessary. How about "Trips taken this year" ??? - Ken |

Ken, I was just looking at the picture above of your car, Melon and her luggage in New Brunswick( you would be wearing all of your own luggage I expect!) Your MGA is temptingly close to the fir tree and I am just wondering how you managed to avoid " Feeding the A some pine"! on that occasion? I still chuckle at the thought of that Christmas photo. Also of the one shown again above of the pipe-smoking highway patrolman standing dangerously close to you as you fixed your fuel pump! Do you have another one of him taken immediately after showing him in a similar position but with eyes closed and fingers in his ears? Colyn |

Ken, great photo with the policeman! I have a similar photo with my TC, and a story to go with it as well. :) |
