MG MGA - Puzzler2

Over the last 10 days my idle RPM has been slowly increasing from its normal 800. Today it was 1200 RPM. On the run home from work this evening it became unpredictable, idling anywhere between about 1200 and 2000 RPM.

What was the cause?

I won't keep you in suspense for a week. When you have had a think go to my website and check under 'Hot Press'

Oh the joys of these old cars. Always keep you on your toes.

Hi Steve, now let me think, weak or broken throttle spring! Honest, I have'nt looked at your website. I see you failed to mention my Coupe at Argentan, which is obscured by me and A N Other looking at the engine. I thought there might be a photo of exhibit 'A' (bumper) Nice site, please email me at terrydrinkwater@btconnect.com, I'll send you some photo's of my brake conversion

Any chance this is a new motor? If so, after break in, its very common to pick up rpms.

No, the current engine (1800) has done 12,000 miles and the previous (1500) dis 8,000 miles. All the transferrable bits have therefore done 20,000 miles so expect the breakage etc.

Terry

I will sort out a picture of my bumper for you! You mean to say you have finally fitted brakes!

Steve,

Dashpot oil?

Intermittent vacuum leak, caused by a loose nut on the vacuum advance line?

BTW, I like these puzzlers.
Bill Boorse

Sticking distributor advance weights? Try breaking the unit down, cleaning all the internals well, coating the appropriate parts with a "light" oil and see if that does the job. Check the drive dog while you're at it.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the suggestions. The answer is on my website. See my first post. Terry hit the mark.

Correct answer be d**ned! Let's keep guessing.

I say it's too much lead in the foot.
Joe Cook

Steve, good riddle. I had the same thing happen this summer only to find out that the fast idle cam had completley fallen off.
The cotter pin had broken and it had managed to work itself free from the idle link and presto.........1500 rpm idles.

INTERMITTENT RUNNING, SOMETIMES RUNNING GREAT, OTHER TIMES HORRIBLY MISFIRING? If your MG has an ELBOW-TYPE RIGHT ANGLE RUBBER CONNECTOR connection on a vacuum line, CHECK IN THE "BEND" ON THE INSIDE for a CRACKED HOSE! This problem can occur at either carburetor/manifold connectors or on "Smog-control" vacuum fittings and is unfortnately fairly common.
