MG MGA - Quiz time
Quiz time This morning I was in my MGA (as usual) on the way to work when I ran through a big hole. After that the car started to die on me at infrequent intervals, sometimes just a judder at others no power for up to 2 seconds. It got to the point where I thought I would have to get the bonnet up but as it was rather wet at the time I decided to battle on to work or to the point of having to do it. As I need to get home this evening, I will need to fix the problem and I already have my suspicions. Just thought you might like to take an educated guess as to the culprit. Two things that are useful as additional info:- 1) The fuel pump still ticked 2) The starter was changed 2 weeks ago. I will inform the solution tomorrow. Sorry no prizes but the satisfaction of being an MGA geek ;-) Cheers Neil |

Neil It sounds like an electrical problem, Loose or broken coil wire. Ken |

Neil Was it a black hole? Parts of your car may have got to work ahead of the rest! Steve |

Was the hole full of water? Might have put some moisture on your distributor cap and wires. |

Steve I like the thought of the black hole. Indeed there was some time travel involved as the surface below the tarmac was the original Belgian cobblestone!! We have a number of roads in such condition here in Belgium, one minute it is smooth and the next you are back in the 1600's. There are a few Stella Artois adverts running in the UK portraying Belgium in what looks like the middle ages. In fact that is how things are today, no special effects needed!! Neil |

Wild guess #1. I think you knocked a fuse loose. Wild guess #2. Your battery wire loosened off of the terminal. |

My guess; loose HT (or LT) wire from coil. Neil |

No need to waste time guessing. Just go through the normal diagnostics, fix it immediately, and drive on. |

And the answer was... LT spade clip was not correctly fixed on the terminal. When I removed the starter motor a couple of weeks ago I removed the cables from the distributor to get better access. Putting it back I only got one leg of the spade onto the terminal. As I went through the hole it loosened and caused intermittant cut-out. Easy fix. Running perfectly again. Neil |

Neil It's that black hole of an engine compartment - very dense area, no light. Once a bit goes in, it's there for keeps, almost impossible to get out again without removing other stuff. Steve |

Hey Neil, does my answer qualify for the prize then? Oh, no prizes, just Geek of the week! |

As an ancient electronics technician, if something doesn't work or stops working, always go back to the last work done. Murphey is a comedian; if there is the slightest chance of something you did can go wrong, it will! Russ |
