Could you explain what this actually means? Just curious. Jeff |

I'm sure I'll butcher this, here goes. In order for a vehicle to be able to take part in FIA approved races it has to be produced to a minimum number of units by its manufacturer, 5000 I believe is the count. These units have to be similar, in aspect and mechanically, to the ones that will effectively take part in racing i.e. if the racing vehicle has a 4 wheel drive transmission so must also have the homologation base vehicle. Certain mechanical and electronic parts that are present in the racing vehicle must also be present in the homologation base unit. If modifications are required to the competition version then a new series of street going vehicles that include them will have to be produced. These cars were bred by racing for racing. As far as my needs, I race a 57 MGA and am looking into a Derrington head (cross flow) with twin Webbers. Its good for about 35 hp. Of couse we can't just throw a cross flow head on the car without prior approval by the governing vintage race board. If we can prove the heads were avaliable and used for racing we can have them approved. |

You could try checking with the RAC Competitions Department in the UK. However, if my memory is up to it, I do not recall there being homologation papers back in the 60's. (at least when I started rallying) Maybe Anders Ditleff Clausager can help you? If not, he may be in contact with someone from the old BMC Competitions Department. Tried taking Gingko Biloba extract to improve the memory, but could never find where I had put the bottle! |

Suggest you try the British Motor Heritage center in Gaydon, England. They should have this on file. I tried to get the same documents for the MGC from the RAC and never got a response, so don't expect much from them. |

Scott, I have copies of the FIA MGA 1600 homologation papers submitted by the factory and approved in September 1959. They include Dunlop 4 wheel disc brakes and K/O disc wheels as options long before the Deluxe was ever thought of. The options list also includes 1 3/4" carbs and long range fuel tanks. However there is no mention of cross flow heads which were an after market item not produced by the factory. I don't believe that they would ever have been legal to use on an FIA production class competition car under Appendix J. Frank |

Hi Scott, no doubt somebody will correct me but I'm sure you can't run a crossflow head in FIA events Terry |

Speak to UK Motor Sports Assoc, www.msauk.org The man to talk to is Marcus Pye. There are a number of different sets of papers for the A depending on year, (or engine) and type, Coupe, Roadster ot Twin Cam. But the crossflow head was not homologated, as not produced in enough numbers. So is not approved for FIA events. I am sure there are non FIA events which would allow it as a period mod. Colin P |

To Frank Graham Is it possible for you to fax a copy of the FIA papers to me. I'm planing to build a MGA to FIA reguladed historic race and need the papers just to se which parts is allowed to use. For final approvement I'll have to buy the original papers from FIA, but it would be nice to have a copy to build the car from. |
