MG MGA - Race History: twin cams

Does anyone know about the vin numbers on twin cams that were involved in racing? How would i find out about this? My twin has fiberglass fenders all the around. Has anyone heard of this?

Don,

I believe that you are a member of the mga twin cam owners' BBS.
I think that the question would receive more responses from there.

I saw a Works Sebring racer MGA at the Richmond, VA car show this Sunday--with Dunlop 4 way disk brakes and Twin Cam wheels.(#52???) It has documented factory fiberglass fenders--front ones anyway. Current owner, who's name embarassingly escapes me now, explained to me that originality was determined from photos of minor race damage while the car was still under Works control. Not that means much for your individual car, but they do exist.

Replacement fiberglass fenders have been available from a number of suppliers for many years. The factory only used fiberglass fenders on the 3 Sebring coupes they prepared for 1962 and all 3 survive. All had pushrod engines with twin cam chassis and suspension. None of the twin cam engined team cars they ran in '59 or '60 had fiberglass fenders. The only twin cam with fiberglass fenders that had a racing history was Bob Olthoff's personal twin cam YRX310, he worked at the factory and acquired a set for his twin cam in '62. This car still exists and it's where abouts are known. What is the full chassis number of your twin cam and is it a coupe or roadster?

The vin is YD1 956, does that help.

Fiberglass fenders on an original UK MGA do not necessarily indicate a racing history.
Wet and salty UK road conditions rusted the bottoms of the fenders and sills very quickly. Fiberglass fenders were a common, lower cost replacement.

Have a look at Barley Gaylord's webpage http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/twincam/tc107.htm

The majority of this list of racing Twin Cams was originally prepared by the MGA Twin Cam Group of the MG Car Club in the UK in the early/mid 1970s. The list therefore reflects UK based cars or cars that were used in famous international events up until that time. It is now many years out of date.

I don't know of any list of Twin Cams that were raced in North America. If such a list existed it would be lengthy if it included contemporary racers right thru to the vintage racers of today.
